13th MEAPET
(Middle East/Africa PET Conference)

7-8 Mar 2012 – Istanbul
Elite World Istanbul Hotel

Changing Landscape of the Middle East & Africa PET Industry & Impact on Regional Trade

PET trade flow is looking at major changes with new capacity expansions and imbalances in the supply and demand pattern. Turkey for instance will revert from a net importer to net exporter by the end of 2012 as new investments are set to make the country more self-sufficient. The build-up of new capacities in countries like Oman, Saudi Arabia and Egypt will make the Middle East a major exporter, targeting import markets such as Africa and Europe.

“PET producer and sheet extruder Octal Petrochemicals of Muscat, Oman, is planning an expansion costing more than $200m (€153.5m).”
Dec 2011, Plastics News

“In Saudi Arabia, SABIC has converted its original single line bottle grade PET and three line fibre grade facility to four bottle grade lines totalling 330 ktpa from mid 2009. SABIC has also announced a further 420 ktpa plant (Uhde Inventa-Fischer technology) which could be on-stream by 2013.” Gulf Petrochemicals & Chemicals Association

“Indorama is moving into Africa with plans for a 75,000 tonnes of solid state polymerisation PET plant at Port Harcourt in Nigeria due to start operating in the last quarter of 2011.” May 2011, BPR News

Demand is looking strong for bottle-grade PET. However, PET as substitute for cotton and high feedstock costs will be a perennial challenge for the PET industry and some of the main drivers of PET pricing. Keeping abreast with technology innovations for preform and bottle production to meet customers’ acceptance and sustainability concerns are also pivotal for the sector to remain competitive.

Recovery in consumer demand growth is matched by investments in new capacity in PET and PTA. The resin majors have announced new projects and expansion…against recent background of M&As and consolidation…What impact will it have on the global and Mexican/Latin American PET prices? Simultaneously many companies are looking to increase their R-PET percentages. Coca Cola is targeting 25 percent R-PET content [April ICIS]. As recycling interest intensifies and becomes a norm… R-PET supply is becoming short. Will its prices escalate beyond virgin PET? Will it still be viable to trade in R-PET?

What are the latest Mexican government’s initiatives for R-PET.? Find out these concerns and many others at CMT’s 9th LAPET conference.

12th CEEPET & Balkans Markets

Novotel Krakow Bronowice

12th CEEPET & Balkans Markets 2011

12th CEEPET & Balkans Markets 2011

CRITICAL SHORTAGE OF R-PET SUPPLY, FEEDSTOCK CHALLENGES & OUTLOOK FOR THE REGION

Volatility in PET prices partly due to polyester supply /demand, continuing tight balance of feedstock drove PET trade to a standoff last December as buyers and sellers could not agree on workable prices.

High demand for polyester fibre especially in Asia, boosted by substitution for cotton has impacted supply for bottle-grade PET. Can PET traders expect improvement in the situation in next coming months as summer kicks in, in Europe ?

Is tight balance of PTA & MEG expected to remain throughout ? Can PTA capacity additions keep up with PET and polyester demand growth ?

CEE & Balkans PET conference will give you true insights into the market developments, the changing trends that will affect your business and the opportunity to meet and make deals with the right market.

Meanwhile, keep track of new developments in PET renewable feedstock as more companies look into replacing oil-based monoethylene glycol (MEG) with BioMEG using sugar-based ethanol as feedstock.

Brand owners, Coca Cola and Heinz have joined hands recently to increase usage of Bio-PET in their packaging . In line with sustainability, can the industry in time, achieve a PET packaging from 100% renewable material ?

Hear from Avantium who has developed a breakthrough technology claiming to be a green alternative to PET and can be produced cheaper than oil-based plastics. Such developments will transform how food will be packaged around the world and definitely impact PET packaging.

While feedstocks are not the only challenges faced, the increasing demand for Recycled PET (rPET) has left the European market in a scramble for more supplies . Food grade r PET surpassed virgin PET prices on tight supply for the first time.

Although post-consumer collection has improved, a lot of materials are still shipped to the Far East, with China being the biggest buyer. And as more companies invest in CSR and increased sustainability, the problem of low availability of rPET for the European market may be here to stay for a very long time.

Konferencja będzie poświęcona aktualnej sytuacji, wyzwaniom, tendencjom i prognozom dotyczącym rynku PET.

Jednocześnie cały czas rośnie popularność i wykorzystanie tzw. tworzywa R-PET, czyli PET pochodzącego z recyklingu.

CEEPET & Balkans Markets
Istanbul, 7-8 June 2010

Rationalisation of European PET Industry & The Road Ahead

Raw material expansions & increased PET inflow from Asia/ Mideast, Recycling Legislation, Sustainability continues to present challenges to the region’s industry.

Market rationalization in 2008/2009 eliminated a number of producers in the region resulting in reported increase in imports to Europe by 25-28% . Most of the supplies originate from Asian and Middle East countries. This year, demand is expected to be steady but supply will be tighter due to outages and lesser imports. Also the EU has opened up antidumping investigations against some major exporters to Europe.

Because of the region’s dependence on imported resin, forecasting PET trade flows has become ever more complicated & challenging. Global factors including PET market trends, raw materials, polyester , film markets need to be taken into consideration in understanding the movement of resins into the market.

Virgin PET market is losing its share to recycled PET as post consumer recycling of PET containers continues to gain momentum in Europe. With increasing importance on sustainability- how is the PET industry embracing this challenge ?
